Thailand Updates Alcohol Sales Laws Ahead of Visakha Bucha Day

Thailand has officially updated its alcohol sales regulations, removing the long-standing afternoon restriction that previously prevented alcohol sales between 2:00pm and 5:00pm.

Under the new rules published in the Royal Gazette, alcohol can now generally be sold continuously from 11:00am until midnight across Thailand, subject to certain exemptions and local licensing regulations.

However, visitors should be aware that the change does not affect Thailand’s alcohol-free Buddhist holidays and election-related bans.

The timing is particularly relevant as Visakha Bucha Day falls on 31 May 2026, one of the major Buddhist holidays when alcohol sales are generally prohibited nationwide. This means bars, restaurants, convenience stores and supermarkets are expected to follow the usual holiday restrictions despite the recent changes to normal sales hours.

For most visitors to Pattaya, the biggest practical impact of the new legislation is that alcohol can now be purchased throughout the afternoon on ordinary days, eliminating one of Thailand’s more confusing regulations.

Pattaya’s nightlife operates a little differently from many other parts of Thailand, with some licensed entertainment venues permitted to serve alcohol later than standard retail outlets. However, nationwide alcohol bans on major Buddhist holidays and election days still apply.

Visitors planning a trip to Pattaya should continue to check alcohol ban dates in advance, particularly around Buddhist holidays and election periods.
