Why Is There an Alcohol Ban?
Thailand bans all alcohol sales during elections to prevent vote-buying and encourage sober voting. The Election Commission confirmed Pattaya City Council and Mayor elections are scheduled for Sunday June 28, 2026. That triggers the standard 24-hour ban.
Important note: Pattaya is sometimes exempt from alcohol bans tied to other provinces’ elections, due to its status as a special administrative zone with its own election schedule. This happened in 2025, when Pattaya was exempt while much of the rest of Thailand was under a ban.

1. Bars & Nightlife
Most bars on Walking Street, Soi Buakhao, LK Metro, Soi 6 etc. handle this one of two ways:
- Close completely and give staff the day off
- Stay open but go “dry” — serving food, soft drinks, mocktails only
Don’t expect to be able to order beer or cocktails. If a bar serves you anyway, they’re risking heavy fines and you could be fined too.
2. Restaurants & Hotels
No alcohol served with meals, even at high-end hotels. Room service won’t bring beer to your room. Hotel bars close or switch to non-alcoholic only.
3. 7-Eleven, Family Mart, Supermarkets & Shops
All alcohol fridges get locked or emptied. You won’t be able to buy beer, wine, or spirits from 6 PM Friday until after 6 PM Saturday.
4. Penalties Are Serious
Selling or buying alcohol during the ban can mean up to 6 months jail and a 10,000 baht fine. This applies to venues and customers alike.
Can You Drink At All?
Yes, but only in private. If you buy alcohol before 6:00 PM on Friday June 27, you can legally drink it in your hotel room or condo.
Public drinking, beach beers, or poolside cocktails are off during the 24 hours.
5 Tips for Pattaya Visitors: June 27-28, 2026
- Stock up early: Hit 7-Eleven or supermarkets before 6PM Friday if you want drinks for your room
- Plan dry activities: Use Saturday daytime for temples, Sanctuary of Truth, Nong Nooch, shopping, or a day trip to Koh Larn
- Check with your hotel: Some hotels organise non-alcoholic pool parties or special dinners
- Don’t argue with staff: Bar and restaurant staff are following the law. Saying “I’m not voting” won’t work
- Food scene is still open: Pattaya’s restaurants, street food, and markets run as normal — just without alcohol
The Good News
The ban ends at exactly 6:00 PM Saturday. By 6:01 PM, Pattaya’s nightlife flips back on. Some bars do a “6 PM countdown” and open their taps right away.
Bottom line: If you know it’s coming, it’s just one dry day. Plan ahead, stock your hotel fridge, and enjoy everything else Pattaya offers.
