Where to Stay in Pattaya: Best Areas for First-Time Visitors

Pattaya is smaller and easier to navigate than Bangkok, but it’s still larger than many first-time visitors expect.

While you can reach most places by taxi, Grab, or the city’s famous baht buses, choosing the right area to stay can make a big difference to how convenient your trip feels.

If you are staying only a night or two, location matters less – transport around Pattaya is cheap, easy and relatively quick.

But if you are staying a week or longer, it makes sense to choose a hotel close to the areas where you are most likely to spend your time.

If you’ve already booked your hotel, don’t worry. Pattaya is compact enough that getting around is rarely difficult.

But for first-time visitors who are still deciding where to stay, a little planning can make your trip much easier.

Quick Guide to Pattaya’s Main Areas

For simplicity, most visitors can think of Pattaya in four main accommodation zones:

Central Pattaya (Beach Road area) – probably the most convenient overall location
Soi Buakhao area – the heart of Pattaya’s bar and nightlife scene
North Pattaya – slightly quieter with good value hotels
Walking Street area – famous nightlife but not always the best place to stay

These aren’t “official” area boundaries, they are simply a guide to help you understand the practical layout of the city.

Further south you’ll also find Jomtien, which is a lot quieter and more relaxed, while Pratamnak Hill is generally considered a residential area and usually better suited to repeat or long-term visitors.

Best Areas to Stay in Pattaya: a Guide

Central Pattaya

For many visitors, this is the most convenient place to stay in Pattaya.

The area between Central Pattaya Road and roughly the Royal Garden Plaza area is right in the middle of the city and provides easy access to almost everything.

From here you are close to:

• Central Pattaya Mall
• Pattaya Night Bazaar
• Mike Shopping Mall
• Beach Road
• many restaurants and bars

Baht buses run constantly along Beach Road and Second Road, making it easy to reach other parts of the city.

If possible, try to avoid hotels directly on Second Road, where traffic noise can be noticeable.

This area offers a good balance between convenience and atmosphere, making it one of the safest choices for first-time visitors.

Soi Buakhao Area

If you are visiting Pattaya primarily for its nightlife, the Soi Buakhao area is where most of the action is.

Soi Buakhao and the streets & alleys branching off it contain one of the highest concentrations of bars and nightlife venues in Pattaya.

major nightlife areas here include:

• LK Metro
• Tree Town
• The main Soi Buakhao strip itself

The busiest stretch runs roughly from the Debua Hotel Pattaya / Soi Boomerang area down toward where Witherspoons is located, although Soi Buakhao itself continues further.

If you want to stay here, it’s generally better to choose a hotel on one of the side streets rather than directly on the main road.

However, it’s worth remembering that throughout the area, bar noise can continue until 2am or later, so staying here involves a trade-off between convenience and quiet.

For nightlife-focused visitors, though, this area is hard to beat.

North Pattaya

The area between Central Pattaya Road and North Pattaya Road is slightly removed from Pattaya’s busiest nightlife districts but still very convenient.

This part of the city includes several major attractions:

• Hard Rock Cafe Pattaya
• Terminal 21 Pattaya
• Central Marina Mall
• Runway Street Food Market

It also has Soi 6, one of Pattaya’s most famous bar streets.

Hotels in this area can sometimes offer better value for money, while still being only a short ride from the main nightlife areas. You may get a bigger and/or better room for the same price you would pay if you stay in the more central areas.

This can be a good choice if you want to be close to Pattaya’s entertainment without staying directly inside the busiest nightlife zones.

Walking Street Area

Walking Street is Pattaya’s most famous nightlife street and one of the best-known party districts in Thailand. The area is home to major nightclubs like 808 and Republic, large bars and long-running venues such as Stones House.

However, despite its reputation, many regular Pattaya visitors prefer not to stay directly in this area. Walking Street itself becomes extremely busy at night, and nearby streets can be noisy and crowded.

In recent years the area has also seen a shift toward large nightclub venues catering to international party crowds, including a growing number of clubs targeting Indian nightlife tourism.

Because of this, many visitors prefer to stay elsewhere and simply visit Walking Street for a night out.

Jomtien

Jomtien sits just south of Pattaya and offers a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere.

The beach here is nicer than Pattaya Beach, and the area has a more residential feel.

However, staying here during a short trip can mean frequent taxi or baht bus rides into central Pattaya, which some visitors find inconvenient.

Jomtien may be a good choice for:

• longer stays
• repeat visitors
• families with children
• travellers looking for a quieter base

Because the area has far less of Pattaya’s adult-entertainment nightlife, it tends to feel more family-friendly.

Pratamnak Hill

Pratamnak sits between Pattaya and Jomtien and is one of the city’s more upscale residential areas.

It has some excellent hotels and viewpoints, but it is not usually the best choice for first-time visitors, as it is away from Pattaya’s main activity areas.

Some visitors choose it once they already know the city. Otherwise you are likely better off staying in one of the more central locations above.

Which Area of Pattaya Should You Stay In?

If you’re visiting Pattaya for the first time, the best area to stay depends mostly on what kind of trip you want to have.

First-time visitors
Central Pattaya is usually the safest choice. You’ll be close to the beach, shopping malls, restaurants and nightlife while still having easy access to transport.

Nightlife-focused visitors
The Soi Buakhao area puts you right in the middle of Pattaya’s bar scene, though it also means late-night noise.

Visitors who want nightlife nearby but not outside the hotel
North Pattaya or the area above Central Pattaya Road can be a good compromise.

Short trips
If you’re only staying a couple of nights, location matters less because taxis and baht buses make it easy to reach most parts of the city.

Families or quieter stays
Jomtien may be the better choice thanks to its more relaxed atmosphere and lower concentration of nightlife venues. North Pattaya is another good option if you want to be a bit closer to town.

Repeat visitors
Areas like Pratamnak Hill can be great once you’re familiar with Pattaya, but aren’t ideal for first time visitors.

Common Mistakes When Choosing Where to Stay in Pattaya

Most visitors have a great time in Pattaya regardless of where they stay, but there are a few common mistakes that can make a trip less convenient than it needs to be.

Booking too far from the areas you plan to visit
Pattaya is easy to get around, but the city is longer than it first appears on a map. Staying close to the areas where you expect to spend most of your time can make a big difference to day-to-day convenience.

Not considering nightlife noise
Some parts of Pattaya – particularly areas around Soi Buakhao and major nightlife zones – can stay lively well into the early hours. If you’re a light sleeper, it’s worth checking the hotel’s exact location before booking.

Assuming all Pattaya beaches are the same
The main beach in Pattaya is ok, but visitors who want a nicer beach with a quieter atmosphere often prefer Jomtien to the south or Wong Amat Beach in the north. However, if beautiful beaches are your main criteria, Pattaya may not be your best option.

Choosing the Walking Street area because it’s famous
Walking Street is probably Pattaya’s best-known nightlife area, but many visitors prefer to stay elsewhere and simply visit it for an evening out.

A hotel slightly away from the busiest nightlife streets often provides a better balance between convenience and comfort.

Tips for Choosing the Right Hotel Location

Pattaya’s neighbourhood boundaries are not always obvious, and two hotels listed as being in the same area can still be quite far apart.

Before booking, it’s worth opening a map and checking:

• distance to the beach
• distance to nightlife areas
• proximity to baht bus routes

A quick look at the map can prevent a lot of unnecessary travelling during your trip.
